“May” is a month of venting education

We’re in the time of year that might be accurately described as the “off-season” in the chimney and venting industry. But by no means does that mean things slow down.

Many homeowners use the warm-weather months to use the Chimney Safety Institute of America csia.org website free zip-code finder and use our powerful search engine to find and schedule their inspection. Many people used their fireplace, stove or other heating appliance with more frequency after a prolonged, cold winter. It’s more important than ever to have a truly educated professional in your home to inspect, remove creosote/buildup as necessary, and provide guidance to make sure things are working optimally.

Besides just working, our sweeps use the warm-weather months to become better educated, in a variety of ways. It’s already begun, as scores of sweeps are taking part in four courses offered by the National Chimney Supply-sponsored “Diagnosing Chimney Failure and Water Penetration courses. Three of them will be in June: in Connecticut, Maryland, and South Carolina. And they each carry 12 CEUs.

May is a phenomenally busy month for CSIA in terms of outreach, education and promotion.

May 6 — CSIA has a representative at a charity workshop in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. John Pilger, of Smithtown, New York, a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, will be leading a two-hour seminar discussing all the shockingly poor construction jobs that sweeps encounter on the job, along with his discussion of common code violations.

May 9 — More than a dozen people are signed up to take the CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician (C-DET) review and exam in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This is a great opportunity for venting specialists to boost their bottom line with a dryer vent technician certification. We even have a video on the need for this homeowner service.

May 12-13 — CSIA will be an exhibitor at the Oil & Energy Service Professionals Road Show in Mohegan Sun, Connecticut. OESP is all about education, improving the technical and business skills of its members and the energy industry at large. The OESP road shows are designed for busy energy professionals. CSIA Certified Sweeps Richard Rua and Donald Ross will staff the booth on behalf of CSIA, and discuss how sweeps in that area are experts at chimney inspections.

May 16 — The CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep Review and Exam, sponsored by Olympia Chimney Supply. The event is in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

May 19-20 — A two-day Masonry Repair Class in Waldorf, Massachusetts. The Mid-Atlantic Chimney Association and Chimney Safety Institute of America are teaming up for the May 19-20 event. We have over two dozen people enrolled, but early registrations will be taken up through May 9. Details here: http://www.csia.org/events/eventdetail.aspx?EventID=849

May 21-23 — The CSIA board of directors will hold an annual meeting in Plainfield, Indiana. CSIA posts minutes of board meetings on our website.

May 23 — The CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep Review and Exam, held in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s a one-day event.
