ASHI January conference, and lessons learned

As the oldest nonprofit association of home inspectors, the American Society of Home Inspectors sets the gold standard for excellence in the industry.

Therefore, it is without question that the Chimney Safety Institute of America is in firm alignment with ASHI’s mission and initiatives, including their popular annual trade show, InspectionWorld 2014, held Jan. 12-15 in Nashville, Tenn.

CSIA — which is committed to public education of chimney safety with our mission focus on the elimination of residential chimney fires, carbon monoxide intrusion cases and similar hazards — was delighted to have Board President John Pilger and Board Vice President Mark Stoner as representatives at our ASHI exhibitor booth.

It was a great opportunity to share our story to inspectors, many of whom were unaware of CSIA’s existence and of our nonprofit mission. We heard several concerns from home inspectors about wanting to become more familiar with the inner workings of chimneys and to have a trusted resource to send would-be homebuyers and Real Estate agents. We brought our helpful baker’s dozen CSIA-approved brochures. That includes “Call a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep.”

We heard “thank you,” numerous times from home inspectors from around the country.

Was it a good use of our time? Most definitely.

ASHI reported that over 627 attendees representing home inspection businesses were at the convention, which bested the previous record set during ASHI convention in Las Vegas, NV.

Add this number to everyone else who participated and attended, and there was a grand total of 932.

Here were some of our takeaways:

1. Home inspectors should always let clients know that the option of hiring a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep is a worthwhile investment for home-buyers as well as home sellers. Knowing hidden issues inside the chimney flue can provide peace of mind. And finding a sweep is easy using our helpfulImage zip-code finder.

2. You don’t have to be a CSIA certified chimney sweep to understand more about chimneys. We have 70 affordable online classes on our e-learning platform.

3. The Chimney Safety Institute of America isn’t just about chimneys. CSIA also promotes the hidden dangers lurking in clothes dryer exhaust vents, and offers a C-DET certification program both online and in person. (There are four review and exams scheduled for 2014.)
